First impressions are everything. That is why your home’s exterior is so important. It is often referred to as a home’s curb appeal.
Curb appeal is how attractive your home appears when seen from the street, sidewalk, or front lawn. The reason curb appeal is important is the same reason it’s important for you to make a good first impression. If your home doesn’t look good from the curb, a potential home buyer may not even bother to explore its interior.
There are a number of simple steps you can take to improve the outside of your home. All of these, especially in combination, can boost your home’s sale price. You never know what small detail will catch a potential homeowner’s imagination. A detail that will lead to a sale.
Below are 6 steps you can take to dramatically improve your home’s curb appeal and value. I will start with the step that is often never considered. It is what I think of as the missing step.
1. Remove unneeded wires, Satellite dishes & TV antennas
These unsightly items clutter the exterior of your house as well as the territorial or other views that your home offers.
If your home is like most, it has at least 3 unneeded wires cluttering the sky.
Overhead wire is the clutter you never notice – until it is gone. You will be surprised at much better your home looks after you get rid of those unneeded overhead wires. Many of our clients are astonished by the improvement.
Your home will not only look better but removing the wires will make any painting and maintenance tasks easier and safer. You will have fewer wires to maneuver a ladder around for siding repair, painting, tree pruning, and other tasks.
Your home’s exterior will look better, cleaner, and more attractive without unneeded wires, Satellite dishes, and TV antennas cluttering its exterior. The views from your home will be better as well. Learn more here. ( put in a link to “why remove wires”)
2. Improve the Landscape
Take action to make your yard look well-maintained and attractive.. It can be as simple as pulling weeds, trimming hedges, and putting down a fresh layer of mulch. You could consider adding some plantings, as well as some colorful annuals in pots.
3. Spruce up your front door
Your front door when presented well can give a welcoming feel to your home. Consider painting it a color that both stands out and complements the rest of your home. You might also consider adding a welcome mat, a house number, or even a door knocker.
4. Clean & Repair damaged siding
A house can look fresher simply by having a professional pressure wash of the exterior. It is a much cheaper option than painting.
Make sure to repair any cracks, missing pieces, and surface chips in the siding. If the exterior is brick, have someone tuck point or add mortar to the brick so it looks fresh and new.
5. Clean & Repair Window
There is nothing like a damaged window to give a bad impression. You should replace any cracked or foggy windows. Also, fix caulking around frames and glazing on panes for a clean and well-maintained look. If there are built-in window boxes, you should make any needed repairs, paint them, and fill them with beautiful flowers. Once all the repairs are complete, clean the windows. That will make your home sparkle inside and out.
6. Add an outside sitting or dining area
Create a sitting or dining area on your porch or covered porch. If you don’t have those spaces, consider creating one or the other. They will give fuel to a potential homebuyer’s imagination about how they could enjoy the outside spaces of your home. The sparks to their imagination could include a play area for kids, a barbeque area, and more.
